My youngest grandchild (my son't first child and only a few months old) has been in hospital overnight in the UK. Seems he had some sort of spasm, threw up everywhere and his lips went blue for a while. His blood pressure shot up and so the doctors are keeping him in overnight for observation. We're obviously all a bit worried.

Australia preparing for war with China
« on: September 05, 2010, 11:29:57 AM »
Tonight on ch9 Sixty Minutes our preparations for war with China are shown..."we're preparing for conflict" says our military guy.

A preview of the show was on tv about 2 hours ago.

Time now for the USA to honour its part of the ANZUS Treaty.

Lucky NSW didn't sell China its power grid, eh?

Lucky I didn't buy a Chinese car.

Firepower

Where do you think the next great threat to world peace will come from? Iran perhaps. Or Iraq?

Maybe a cave somewhere in the Afghan mountains?

Well, there are some who believe that China, the newest superpower on the world block, is the country to watch.

And if they're right, Australia better be ready.

Michael Usher has just spent some time with our navy, watching in awe as they played war games with the Americans and twelve other nervous Pacific nations and there was some serious fire power on display.

China is indeed a country to watch. It's a very old civilisation that has endured many wars and invasions. But it has also learned many things. One of the things it has learned is that there are more than one way to achieve an objective.

While the USA has been busy concentrating on developing a consumer society protected by a large and expensive military, China has been concentrating on developing its manufacturing base, infrastructure and domestic economy. It has now surpassed Japan as the second largest economy in the world. It seems to be successfully achieving its objectives without burdening itself with the cost of unproductive military expansion. Why waste money on attacking a nation if you can simply buy it with all its infrastructure intact? China is waging a subtle economic war. The US is spending a fortune preparing for a military one.

Very well said TC & couldn't agree more, one can only hope that they never decide to call in their debts in a hurry. ::)

That only stands to reason if the aggressor with a powerful military has chosen to limit his abilities with social and moral convention.
To put it in a a simplified analogy lets say you are rich (powerful economy) and I am armed (powerful military) then all i need do is take what you have bt force and compel you to make more. Unrestrained might will always win of economics or any other intangible!

The Chinese probably also remember the British and the boxer rebellion as well as invasion by the Japanese? They have a formidable deterrent against such military action now - restraining the might of others as you say.

There sure is!

Boycott all their products!...from their possibly-diseased apples Gillard will be importing before Christmas...bye bye Australia's apple industry...
...to their cars and trucks being sold here.

Stop sending them iron ore etc to make weapons, ships and planes with which to kill us.

Bring all our manufacturing back here, and desert China.

In past centuries, before trade globalisation, deserting China may have worked? I doubt it will now – unless there is a major global economic collapse.

Australia relies heavily on its trade with China to maintain its economic well being and current standard of living.

There is nothing preventing Australians from boycotting Chinese consumables if they chose to do so. There is also nothing preventing Australia from not selling iron ore or coal to China. The reason it’s not happening, and probably never will, is that Australia gains more from its exports to China than it loses.

Most of the iron ore sent to China is used to produce the steel that the Chinese use to manufacture infrastructure and production equipment that China uses to produce the cars, trucks and other consumables that China exports and uses domestically.

Even if Australia increased its local manufacturing capacity it would be limited by the size of its domestic market and its high cost structure would limit its capacity to export these goods in competition with others in the international marketplace.

China hasn’t indicated it has any intention of killing Australians? It hasn’t made any attempts in recent times to reclaim Taiwan by force of arms– which probably is within its capabilities. Paranoia comes in many forms.

Deserting trade with China would be far more painful to Australia than it would be to China. Perhaps that’s why there is so little support for such action?

All very true TC but anything Australia can do to reduce its dependency on China without unnecessarily hurting ourselves in the process is a good thing in the long run. All the better if in doing so we again begin to produce quality products of our own even if only for our own consumption!

To be honest I really can't see us going to war with China. At least not a military one, maybe more along the lines of a commercial one.

If they were so inclined they could simply pay each individual what price he asked tu up and leave the country unpopulated so they could move in. Hell they could even afford to have those willing to sell to force those not willing to do so so. Their economy is significant and the Australian continent could be put to good use for them.
Its not going to happen just putting the size of their economy into perspective!
